As part of the GOLD Standard Banyan wishes to track and report progress on the measurable parameters on the targeted social benefits to ragpickers & urban poor. Banyan has carried out a preliminary survey amongst 52 members of this Rag pickers/ Recyclers group, in some of the areas of Khairatabad, Kavadiguda, Somajiguda, Ameerpet areas of Hyderabad to profile this group. The survey was explained to help identify their health insurance needs etc. Please see pictures of some of this group enclosed. Some of the key findings from this preliminary study are as under.

i. Age group Is highly distributed from 8 years to 65 years, with an average age of 27.5 years

ii. Only 15% of the group has studied up to primary school that is 7th Grade..

iii.
A large population or 37% percentage of this group is not in good health & suffers from some kind of serious or persistent disease including problems relating to Chest, Eyes, Night Blindness etc.

iv. Many of the entire families are in the same activities.

v.
Average Income per day varies from Rs 15 (0.33 USD/ day) to Rs 100 ( 2.22USD/day), with the over all average of Rs 40 (0.88USD/day).

vi.
A vast majority of them take shelter next to Municipal Solid Waste Dumps in the Urban areas, under the Flyovers, bus stops etc. Very few have reported living in rented space costing about Rs 400/month (9USD/month) .

vii. Most have access to drinking water from hand pumps or bore wells or municipal water in some instances.

viii. It appears that almost entire group, with exception of one person (2%) is from outside the city &
comes from districts like Kurnool & Cudappah, which are rain dependent for agriculture & have often been a victim of low rain fall & poor agricultural incomes.

ix.
Welfare Needs assessment: Many of the surveyed volunteered to speak out their needs & it may be best summarized as under.

x. Age Group: 50+ ability to do productive work has dropped considerably and finds it hard to earn

enough. Lives on Free Food being distributed by Temples. Wants employment that does not require very hard work. Many need medical help.

xi.
20-35 years Age group: Productive group. Many not wanting any welfare activity at all. Some have said a Tri cycle Rickshaw costing Rs 2000 ( 44 USD) would help then do more. Many Need medical help.

xii. Below 20 Years: Mostly do not know what is happening to them. Some of them will be in their

prime by 2020. Needs education & counseling to help them access development choices through education.

xiii.
Access to shelter or Low Cost Housing: this appears to be the most basic need across the entire age group, thus avoiding the source of new diseases from decaying Municipal Solid Waste in various dumps etc.

xiv.
Counseling on Hygiene & Good Living: This is another area where many of them could be helped by preventing them from wasting the hardest earned money in Cinema, Alcohol etc.
